Future JP Art Collective

Thanks to the incredible community support for The Rainbow Nook, we are starting to plan for our future! We've begun drafting plans for "JP's Artist Alley," a non-profit collective that would go far beyond just fiber arts.

What Would This Look Like?

  • Moving into the old Boomerang's space at 716 Centre Street
    • Updating and improving the existing space
    • Installing automatic door openers and other necessary ADA compliance items
  • Dividing the space into a few main sections:
    • An expanded gallery space showcasing more local artists across all media types
      • Monthly rotating space to feature youth and teen artists
    • A makerspace/lesson space for classes, workshops, and studio time
    • A larger art supplies thrift store that features The Rainbow Nook's existing offerings, as well as a broader range of other crafting supplies
  • Expanded hours, local job opportunities, space for events

Why 716 Centre Street?

Ask just about anyone who's been in or around JP in the past several years, and they'll all respond with the same answer: "Ugh I miss Boomerangs!!" It was a staple of Centre Street, a much-needed queer and accessible third space that perfectly served JP's unique community. The space has sat vacant like a sad ghost ever since Boomerangs closed, despite occupying a large amount of prime downtown square footage.

The positive association with the space is a huge draw; people are already familiar with it, would actively love to revitalize it, and can easily envision the potential. Additionally, unlike some of the other older commercial structures, it's already (mostly) ADA compliant which is essential for our customers. The amount of square footage would allow for larger-scale art projects, increased class capacity, and space to comfortably sponsor events such as JP Open Studios. The parking lot in the back and existing storage space are also huge draws.

Can I Help?

Absolutely!! We're currently seeking:

  • Connections to local individuals with experience in commercial financial planning, non-profit operations, crowdfunding such as BackerKit, and grant funding/writing
  • Ideas and input from local artists! Want to display/sell your work? Interested in the makerspace? Have ideas for classes that you can't find anywhere? Contact us!
  • Individuals or organizations interested in providing initial capital for the project
  • Eventually, there will also be lots of volunteer opportunities!

Thank you for your interest in this space and your continued support of The Rainbow Nook!! We truly couldn't envision something like this without our incredible community.
